In 1908, workmen demolishing an old tavern in the centre of Brussels made an extraordinary discovery in a cistern hidden beneath the tiled kitchen floor - about 150,000 medieval silver coins.

Analysis of the hoard revealed that the coins were buried around 1265AD and that more than half of them were sterling silver English pennies, together with smaller quantities struck in Scotland and Ireland. Curiously, no records have ever been found that reported this huge sum of money missing. Who brought them to Brussels, and why they were buried, remains a mystery.

The Brussels Hoard holds the world record for being the largest hoard of buried coins ever discovered.

In 1247, English pennies were issued with a new anti-tampering design to make it easier to detect ‘clipping,’ the practice of illegally trimming metal from the edge of the coin. The new reverse featured a voided long cross which extended all the way to the edge. The Brussels Hoard includes silver English pennies struck in London and Canterbury.
