Obverse: Depicts the fifth and latest effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark unveiled in 2015.

Reverse: Painted nine years after the battle, Pieneman’s The Battle of Waterloo depicts the Duke of Wellington receiving the crucial message that the Prussian army were coming to his aid on the battlefield.

Such was the popular appeal of the battle that Pieneman saw the opportunity to create a huge painting that could be exhibited as a tourist attraction in its own right. Measuring 27 feet wide and 18 feet high, the giant work with its life-size figures in the foreground was designed to give viewers the impression that they were actually standing on the battlefield with the heroes of Waterloo.
To assist the artist, the Duke of Wellington and some of his surviving officers sat for Pieneman so that he could depict their likenesses as faithfully as possible. A special temporary pavilion was constructed in Hyde Park and the painting was exhibited there for several months in 1825 to great acclaim.
