During the First World War (1914-1918), King George V became a beacon of hope for many, embodying the expression ‘For King and Country!’. A patriotic monarch, he wisely changed his family name from Saxe-Coburg and Gotha to the more British sounding Windsor. He also travelled throughout Britain and the Empire to meet his subjects and began the tradition of broadcasting a personal message to them every Christmas. This brought the royal family closer to the public than ever before.

The war put an end to gold coins in our pockets and purses in Britain. The government needed gold to help pay our substantial war debts and appealed to the public to exchange their gold sovereigns at the bank for new paper Treasury banknotes of the same value. Most of the coins were shipped to the USA and melted into bars. As George V was the last monarch to appear on circulating gold coins, sovereigns bearing his iconic portrait are highly sought after by collectors today.

The House of Windsor George V Proof Quarter Sovereign is struck in solid 22-carat gold to the highest possible proof quality. George V is depicted with traditional sprigs of oak taken from the Windsor crest and with the centrepiece of the British Crown Jewels, St Edward’s Crown. George V wore this for his coronation in 1911, and it has been worn by every crowned British monarch since then.
